Maryland Driver Improvement
Maryland Driver Improvement Program (DIP): A Comprehensive Guide:
Maintaining a valid driver's license is an essential aspect of personal independence. However, certain circumstances or decisions can impact your driving record, requiring extra steps to regain or maintain your driving privileges. The Maryland Driver Improvement Program (DIP) was created to help individuals who have encountered difficulties with their driving record and need support to improve their driving aptitude.
What Is the Maryland Driver Improvement Program?
The Maryland DIP is a rehabilitation program established by the state to provide support and instruction to individuals who have shown poor driving habits, resulting in legal actions or points on their driver's license. This four to six-hour course is designed for drivers who have already obtained their license but need intervention to avoid potential suspension or revocation.
Who Needs to Attend DIP?
Drivers may be assigned to the Maryland Driver Improvement Program for various reasons, including:
- Referral by a judge
- Accumulating 5-7 points on their driving record
- Conviction or probation for a moving violation
Drivers with 3-5 points may also be required to attend a DIP as a preventive measure. Additionally, some individuals voluntarily complete the program before their court date as a proactive step toward rehabilitation.
How Does DIP Work?
Step 1: Receiving Notification
If you are required to attend DIP, you will receive a letter from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). This letter will provide detailed instructions and a list of approved DIP providers in your area. It is your responsibility to contact one of these providers to gather information about class locations, dates, times, and fees.
Step 2: Completing the Online Portion
Our program offers an online-only course. However, individuals under 18 are not eligible to take online courses. Once you complete the online portion, you must schedule an appointment to take the final exam.
Step 3: Scheduling the Final Exam After completing the online course, you must schedule your exam at our Owings Mills office. Testing is available by appointment only, typically from Tuesday to Friday, between 12 PM and 3:30 PM. To schedule, you will need:
- A valid photo ID
- Your printed certificate of online completion
- Payment of $100 (credit card only
The final exam consists of 20 questions and must be completed in person.
Step 4: Completing the Program
Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a certificate of completion. This certificate is vital for your records. The program provider will also notify the MVA on your behalf to confirm your compliance.
Important Notes
- Timely Completion: You must complete the DIP by the date specified in your referral letter. Failure to do so may result in further penalties or loss of your license.
- Rescheduling:If you cannot attend a class or exam on the designated date, you must contact the MVA with a valid reason. If accepted, you will be allowed to reschedule.
Why Take DIP?
Participating in the Maryland Driver Improvement Program helps you regain control over your driving privileges and demonstrates a commitment to responsible driving. Completing this program can be the first step toward a safer and more independent life on the road.
